Why are street lamps so tall?

Some street lamps are taller than I imagine. Why don’t we make the light as short as possible to save the costs?
  • The taller the street lamps, the wider areas they can illuminate. An example is the high mast light, which can be 20 meters high. With this height, sometimes 2 or 3 of them can light up a whole square.
  • The street lights for the main streets are relatively high. This is because the main streets are wide, and the lights need to be high enough to provide sufficient light. Besides, if the lights are too short, they will be a potential danger for the high vehicles or loads on the trucks.
