Select the Appropriate Container
While most herbs grow well in tiny pots, basil needs a bit more room to spread out. The ideal container is one that is wide enough to support the roots of the plant and at least 6 inches deep. Terra cotta pots are a go-to option because they are porous and allow for efficient drainage. Any container with drainage holes, though, is OK.
Choose the Correct Soil
Basil likes its soil to be rich in organic content and well-draining. The optimum potting mix contains a high percentage of either vermiculite or perlite. Garden soil can be too dense and heavy for container gardening, so steer clear of it.
Provide Sufficient Light
It needs at least six hours of sunlight each day. You can opt for grow lights if you don’t have access to a sunny window. Put the grow lights 6 to 12 inches above the basil for 12 to 14 hours a day. If you’re using natural light, position the container close to a window that faces south and gets plenty of sunlight.
Water and Fertilize Regularly
Basil prefers to be kept slightly damp but not soggy. When the top inch of soil appears dry to the touch, water your plant. To prevent wetting the leaves, which might result in fungal illnesses, make sure you water the plant from the base. Fertilize your basil every two to three weeks to encourage healthy development.
Prune Regularly
When the plant is about 6 inches tall, pinch off the top set of leaves to promote bushy growth. By doing this, you’ll also stop the plant from blossoming too soon, which can make the leaves lose their flavor.
