Maintaining the intensity of the light depends greatly on the distance between the LED grow light and the plants. The plant won’t receive enough light to start photosynthesis if the light source is too far away from it. Of course, placing the fixtures too near can also hinder plant growth. A suitable illumination distance is therefore required. For various stages of plant growth, below can be used as a general rule of distance.
- Seedling stage: Plants at the seedling stage require less light. In this situation, the LED grow light should be placed between 24 and 36 inches above the soil’s surface. They will be able to germinate successfully thanks to the mild and soft illumination from this distance.
- Vegetative stage: For optimum growth, plants in the vegetative stage need more powerful lights. Therefore, you should close the gap between the light and the plants; ideally, it should be between 12 and 24 inches. The plant will benefit from photosynthesis and grow more quickly as a result.
- Flowering and fruiting stage: To encourage healthy plants in the flowering and fruiting stages, more intense lighting is required. The light should be positioned between 16 and 36 inches from the plant canopy for best effects.
Most importantly, the recommended distance may differ in the size and light intensity of the grow light.
