What is Aluminum PCB
Aluminum PCB for LED is a kind of printed circuit board that contains a thin layer of dielectric thermally conductive material. Its metal substrate contains a combination of aluminum, while the metal core can be made entirely of metal, or it can be made of fiberglass combined with aluminum.
Normally, aluminum PCB is composed of three layers:
Base layer: The base layer is an aluminum alloy sheet, which offers great electrical insulation and thermal conductivity.
Thermal insulation layer: This layer consists of a ceramic polymer that can isolate PCB from mechanical or thermal damage thanks to its thermal resistance and viscoelastic properties.
Circuit layer: This layer plays the most important role in aluminum PCB as it provides the copper foil circuit required for PCB operation.

Different types of Aluminum PCB
There are three commonly used aluminum PCBs: flexible aluminum, hybrid aluminum, and multilayer aluminum PCB, among which flexible aluminum and hybrid aluminum PCB are the most used in the LED lighting industry. Let’s discuss them one by one:
Flexible aluminum: Apart from nice thermal conductivity, this type of aluminum PCB is also featured with excellent insulation and flexibility as it utilizes ceramic fillers and polyimide resin materials. And it provides a high-performance connection without using cables, connectors and fixtures, which will not take much space and can reduce the production costs as well. In addition, flexible aluminum PCB has excellent strength and durability.
Hybrid aluminum: True to its name, it is a kind of PCB that mixes a non-heat-resistant material with the aluminum base metal. By mixing them together, the circuit board has better heat dissipation performance and increased rigidity. It has a lower price than entirely aluminum PCB, but it has less flexibility.
Multilayer aluminum: It is composed of multiple layers of thermally conductive dielectrics that have high performance in conducting electricity. However, its heat transfer efficiency is relatively low, but it can meet the basic heat dissipation needs.
Highlights of Aluminum PCB
Cost-effective
Compared to other metal-core PCBs, aluminum PCBs have much lower costs and also have high heat dissipation performance without using the heat sinks. Thus, it is a very cost-effective choice.
Excellent Heat Dissipation
Heat dissipation is a very important factor that needs to be considered when designing PCBs, as LEDs would give off much heat that would affect the lifespan of electronic components and whole devices. And aluminum PCB has excellent heat dissipation, which is also the reason why it is so popular in the LED industry.
Durable and Dimension Stability
Aluminum PCB is featured with high durability and is not easy to wear and tear. It also has strong dimension stability, and is not easy to bend even in high temperatures. So it is widely applied in automobiles and streetlights.
