What is FR4 PCB

FR4 PCB is a type of printed circuit board that uses FR(Flame Retardant) materials, and the number “4” stands for flame retardant material level. FR4 means a fiberglass-reinforced epoxy-laminated sheet and also the fourth grade of material that is used to make these laminated sheets. And MOKO offers different types of FR4 PCBs to meet our clients’ different requirements:

Single side FR4 PCB

It is made of epoxy printed circuit board with copper foil on one side, and all components are soldered on just a single side. It has relatively low costs than other types of FR4 PCBs.

Double side FR4 PCB

Compared to single-side FR4 printed circuit boards, double-side FR4 PCB allows us to mount components on both sides, which would help to achieve a higher density of circuits and produce complex circuits. It is perfect for applications and electronics like LED lighting systems, vending machines, car dashboards, etc.

Multiple layers FR4 PCB

True to its name, multiple layers FR4 PCB refers to FR4 PCB with more than 2 layers. It has many advantages such as higher thermal conductivity and high-quality insulation, but the cost of it is quite high.

Rigid FR4 PCB

The core materials for rigid FR4 PCB are FR materials only, no other materials added, so the whole printed circuit board is rigid.

Rigid-flex FR4 PCB

It has core materials that are rigid FR4, but the circuits of it are flexible. This kind of PCB can be bent easily during the welding process.

LED FR4 PCB is used for wide applications ranging from LED lighting to electric systems thanks to its excellent thermal, mechanical, and electrical properties. In addition, the versatility of flame retardant laminates and prepregs make it adaptable to many production procedures.

Cost-effective

One of the main reasons why it is welcomed by many manufacturers is the lower cost of FR4 materials when compared with other PCBs. And it also has lower processing costs, making it a cost-effective choice for many manufacturers.

Low moisture absorption

FR4 PCB has a low moisture absorption of 0.10%, which means that it has a great capability to resist water. So it is a perfect option for marine applications.

The Disadvantages of LED FR4 PCB

Instability of insulation

In the condition of high power, voltage, or heat, FR4 would have unstable insulating performance. This means that may convert to a conductive material and even cause the failure of the board.

Temperature Limitation

It is not recommended to use LED FR4 PCB in a high temperature environment. Meanwhile, we should notice that the lead-free soldering is not available for it as the reflow temperatures for no-lead PCBA can reach up to 250 °C that FR4 PCB cannot stand.

Signal losses

FR4 has another downside that is signal losses. Compared to other materials, it has a greater DF(dissipation factor), so it is not suitable for high-frequency applications.

Key Considerations for FR4 PCB Design

1.Thickness of Sheet

You should design the thickness of the board based on your project, and thin sheets help to reduce stress. However, as to PCB with grooves, we cannot use too thin circuit boards. And the normal thickness of the FR4 board is about 1 to 3 inches.

2.Impedance matching

Impedance or frequency matching is another factor that should be considered as it helps printed circuit boards to run safely, and also can inform us of the capacitance for multi-side PCBs.

3.Spacing

The thinner the circuit board is, the more flexible it is, thus, thin boards are more popular among manufacturers. In addition, thin FR4 PCBs are easier to heat and bend.

5.Compatibility with the Components

When designing PCB, we should pay attention to the compatibility of the components. For instance, THT components require thin printed circuit boards.
